Uppsala researchers create world's fastest water heater

Many places teach that there are three states of matter; solid, liquid and gas, but there are actually four. The fourth is plasma. To put it very simply, a plasma is an ionized gas, a gas into which sufficient energy is provided to free electrons from atoms or molecules and to allow both species, ions and electrons, to coexist. Direct annihilation with the bound electrons in neutral atoms and molecules (Iwata, Greaves & Surko Reference Iwata, Greaves and Surko 1997) depends on the neutral pressure and composition, but is independent of plasma density; this process has a weak temperature dependence and the red lines in figure 4 use the low-temperature limit (Kurz et al. Reference Kurz, Greaves and Surko 1996). Plasmas are gases that are so hot that electrons are knocked free of the atom, making the atoms electrically charged ions. The un-ionized atoms are called neutrals. On earth, accurately measuring neutral hydrogen concentration in plasmas could offer insights into future fusion experiments and impact the design of a future fusion-based energy source.

Other states, such as quark–gluon plasmas, are believed to be possible but in the plasma state has variable volume and shape, but as well as neutral atoms,  Plasma.

Plasmas If most of the atoms or molecules in a region are ionized, the resulting state of matter corresponds to a gas that is electrically neutral on a global scale, but composed microscopically of positively charged ions and the negatively charged electrons stripped from the atoms to form the ions. Such a state of matter is called a plasma.

Plasma atoms

Updated July 12, 2019 One form of matter is plasma. Plasma consists of free electrons and ions that aren't associated with atomic nuclei. You encounter it every day but may not recognize it. Plasma is considered the fourth state of matter. The other fundamental states of matter are liquids, solids, and gases.

Plasma atoms

For example, when hydrogen nuclei collide, they can fuse into heavier helium nuclei and release tremendous amounts of energy in the process. Plasma is a gas were all the atoms have been split into electrons, protons and neutrons. So it is like a soup of electrons, protons and neutrons all mixed together but not structured in atoms. This means that a plasma ‘cloud’ behaves as a whole instead of behaving as a bunch of individual atoms.

Plasma consists of free electrons and ions that aren't associated with atomic nuclei. You encounter it every day but may not recognize it. Plasma is considered the fourth state of matter. The other fundamental states of matter are liquids, solids, and gases. Typically, plasma is made by heating a gas until its electrons have sufficient energy to escape the hold of the positively charged nuclei. As molecular bonds break and atoms gain or lose electrons, ions form. Plasmas and nuclear fusion Fusion is the process occurring within the plasma core of our Sun in which the nuclei of lighter atoms link to form a heavier atom.
